Fire That Customer! Should you fire that customer? If you're a business owner then chances are you've had a difficult customer. You know the ones. They're never happy. You follow their instructions and bend to their will constantly and they are never satisfied. You always wonder if you could be doing something different or if you need to change something about yourself or the business.

Not Every Customer is Created Equal

You may not necessarily need to change anything. Some customers are just hard to please and difficult to deal with. When confronted with one of these customers you have two choices - you could either raise your rates so that at least they will be worth your time or you could just let them go. It may be hard to let them go. However, doing so will free your mind and let you focus on your other business tasks with zest.

To Let Go or Not

There are a few things to consider when determining whether you should fire that customer or not. The big one is to consider your peace of mind. Chances are that a difficult customer drains life and energy from you. No matter how much money you are getting from them you have to ask yourself if it's worth it.

Firing them could give you peace of mind which will make room to form more lucrative relationships with the rest of your customers and could also prime you to seek out new opportunities which will likely lead to new customers. However, keeping them might be worth it especially if you get more money from them.

Peace of Mind is Important

Letting a customer go is about more than just the money - it's about preserving your peace of mind. As a business owner you need a fresh mind to be able to accomplish your goals, get new clients, and make your current clients or customers happy. So what happens when you are dealing with a difficult customer?

At first, you may not think it has any affect. However, over time you'll find yourself thinking about the difficult customer as you're dealing with other customers and trying to get work done for other aspects of your business. Once this starts happening it is best to fire that customer because keeping them around, no matter how lucrative the money is, will affect your long term business dealings.
